My “The Covid Year,” ran from March 2020 to April 2021 – until I finally got vaccinated. Given so much time in isolation, I would’ve thought I’d have managed to complete more art. Instead, I spent energy dealing with health and home issues. However, I did find some time to think and imagine what the future might hold.
Happily, the worst of the pandemic seems to be behind us now, and I’m literally “signing” back in to my creative life. I’ve resurrected a skill from my youth: ILLUSTRATED SIGN PAINTING. It’s spontaneous, fun and a great people-pleaser. While I haven’t abandoned aquarelles and paper, wood and acrylics are a more stable medium for the beachfront homes of Puerto Cayo, Ecuador. And my custom signs are very popular home decoration.
In the past, the small fishing village in which I live offered few creative opportunities to local artisans. But as I am just now finding out, there are many talented, creative souls in the area. The arts could offer a realistic employment opportunities for locals and foreigners, young and old alike.
Slowly, I have been developing a vision to build a shop for creative local products on the property I own next to my house. The materials, people and energy may soon come together. Perhaps that is another “Sign of the Times.”
